Yes, Freud Was a Jew

Yes, Freud was a Jew.

I am often struck by how often my clients do not realize that Freud was indeed a Jewish man. I surmise that part of the reason for this was because Freud often had to keep his Jewish identity to himself, as he lived during a time of great violence towards Jews.

Freud writes in Moses and Monotheism about his hesitancy to publish the last part of his treatise on Moses saying: “Thus it may lie hid until the time comes when it may safely venture into the light of day, or until someone else who reaches the same opinions and conclusions can be told: ‘In darker days there lived a man who thought as you did.’”

He continues by explaining that his silence: “is not cowardice, but caution; … and I shall guard against doing anything that would serve his [German National Socialists] interest.”

I am glad his works did venture into the light of day and hope for lighter days to come.
